Sit and Stare

Have you ever, those of you who have spent time on a college campus, just walked around and crowd watched for a few minutes. A lot of interesting conversation topics arise while you are sitting and staring, when those people around you pay no attention to the kid taking notes. In college, it is permitted to sit around and write where ever the mood strikes you, and because of this convenient fact, i am able to simply take a seat and listen to whatever i want. This blog will be a continuing one, due to the ever-changing topics of conversation across the campus. Today's ideas came form a little group of students, all from New York I'm assuming, based on their accents, plus the added bonus that one of them is in my SOCY 255
class. The main idea, due i can only assume to restlessness and the desire to leave town, was spring break. A common sub topic was the idea of drinking and partying down in Orlando over the upcoming break. Further more, the guy i know brought up the topic of men being raped when they party. This seemed like an odd idea to bring up in such an open environment, but that's how this guy is. In class, he is open to debate on not only, gender equality, stating the superiority of men (a notion that i am not by any means supporting) to the topics of homosexuality and bisexuality, which have also been openly opinionated on in class. Therefor, the open argument between the occurrence of rape between men and woman came as no surprise to me, however, in the crowded library, it seemed to rattle some people, whom i found staring and listening in, as i was.

Today a small group of students sitting t in the corner of the library were discussing how the government was controlling the population by allowing us the assumption that we are in control. Something about how through movies and commercials, we as a country are controlled in every aspect of our lives. They were also talking about how there are also people that we should be suspicious of, mainly foreighn exchange students. They were discussing a French student whom they refused to talk around because they didnt know what she might understand and not.

The Local Gameroom...

In my experience as a college student, visiting my friends and experiencing all that the college life has to offer, it seems that in some form or another, the students are provided with a "game room" or recreation area for students to congregate and enjoy a little free time while on campus. I feel that this is partially in an effort to encourage interaction between students and a sense of friendship in a new environment. At the college campus i attend, we have just such a room at our disposal. It is modestly furnished with 2 pool tables, a foosball table, one pingpong table, a pinball machine, and a television. There are also several chairs and tables set up along the walls.

Now, it is my understanding that in some instances, these accomadations would be more than welcome. However, before passing judgement on our little room, you may want to hear a few things.

Both pool tables are without a working ball return system as well as a working coin exchange. They are scratched, torn, and the sticks are just a little bent with no tips. The foosball table has no ball, and half the "players" dont move. A pingong table with no net and a pinball machine that doesnt accept any change to play it complete our aray of game room tables.
So, in a room designed for intermixing of students, there are a few chairs and a television that supprots only the basic tuning and a simple av input and output.

Not to tread on any toes, because the effort has obviously been put forth, but it seems a little bit of a slackers job to keep the room maintained.
